What's the difference between a Lawyer and an Attorney?

When speaking about legal matters and legal professionals, the term "lawyers" comes up a lot. That is because the terminology "Lawyers" refers to a wide array of legal professionals. A lawyer can be anyone who has studied law and successfully attained a bachelor's degree in Laws. According to South African law, if a lawyer has no additional qualifications or professional designations, he/she may not legally represent a client in court. They may act as a legal consultant giving legal advice, or as a policy advisor.

Attorneys, on the other hand, can specialize in different fields of law and, in certain circumstances, represent clients in a court of law. To become an attorney, you first need to complete your Bachelors in Law (LLB), followed by a form of internship with a practicing attorney for a specified period of time, after which you need to write a Board Examination. Should you pass, you can apply at the high court to be admitted as an attorney.

In short, an attorney has passed the bar exam and has been approved to practice law in his/her jurisdiction.

What does a Notary Public do?

A notary public (or notary or public notary) of the common law is a public officer constituted by law to serve the public in non-contentious matters usually concerned with estates, deeds, powers-of-attorney, and foreign and international business. A notary's main functions are to administer oaths and affirmations, take affidavits and statutory declarations, witness and authenticate the execution of certain classes of documents, take acknowledgments of deeds and other conveyances, protest notes and bills of exchange, provide notice of foreign drafts, prepare marine or ship's protests in cases of damage, provide exemplifications and notarial copies, and perform certain other official acts depending on the jurisdiction. Any such act is known as a notarization. The term notary public only refers to common-law notaries and should not be confused with civil-law notaries
